The point is that there is little correlation between how good a player was and how good they were as a GM. Which is very different than saying good players don’t make good GM’s.
And the notion of non players being GM's is still very rare. You don't have to be an NHLer to be an elite hockey player. Lou Lamoriello I believe was an accomplished college hockey player, a level few ever compete at.
