From a wargame simulation perspective Harpoon 2 was nearly perfect. It was a blend of tactics and understanding technology, and it worked extremely well.
There was nothing worse then doing a convoy escort and suddenly missiles start popping up from every direction. The enemy was really smart. They'd use subs and airforce and completely bush wack you.
I remember one mission where I had to bomb airfields in I think it was Iraq. I sent my carrier task force up and decided I needed a way to get rid of the Iranian Airforce. So I launched a strike of F-14 escorts and F-18 fighter bombers. But I turned off the radars of the F-14's and left the F-18's radiating. I approached the coast line and a huge number of Iranians fighters launched. So I turned off the F-18 radars and sent them home and activated the F-14's and sent them in launching my phoenix missiles from 100 miles away. It was a cool bushwack and I cleared the skies and sent my bombers in. Meanwhile I had to keep an eye on my fleet because I kept picking up sub signatures.
