One thing to consider, with regards to sleeping techniques, I've found, is that you need to be consistent.
Everyone involved in the sleep time routine MUST be on the same page.
Over Christmas my daughter (22 months old) was sick, and we babied her, (slept with her, coddled her) her grandmother was worst (stayed with her all night), and when we got back home and tried to go back to normal routine, it was back to square one (she normally would get story, and we could leave, she fell asleep herself).
