I simply think the momentum turned on them in the playoffs and they couldn't fix it. The schedule makers were kind enough to afford the Flames the opportunity to extract some revenge in the opening game at least.

Over a large sample size (i.e. the 82 game regular season) the Flames showed the assembled guys can be among the best in the business so I think that's why Treliving didn't make a big splash. We jettisoned our worst two players from last year to our rival (Neal was a dumpster fire, Smith was costing the team points until about mid season) and brought in some guys motivated to wash the Oiler stink off themselves. It's looking to be another exciting season, but this year they'll be some expectations to get through at least a round or two in the second season. I wholly agree that if this group fizzles out in the same manner this year as they did last, then is when a shake up will come.
