It is true that each dollar of cap space is more valuable the smaller the cap.
They are different deals and the players are different too. I personally believe Aho is more valuable (but hard to quantify) so for me, the Tkachuk equivalent deal for Aho is $7.5 million for 3 years. At that number, his $8.5 million over 5 years looks good. But the longer the deal the more uncertainty about the market, the cap etc. so there is no definitive right or wrong.
On purely a three year deal, IMO Tkachuk should be just a little lower than $7 million.
