To me that’s what makes them perfect. They are amazing despite their limited budget, sometimes because of it. We all saw what George did to Star Wars with a big budget.
Many of the movies listed in this thread are just a random assortment of people’s favourite movies.
To me the criteria you laid out mean that even with updated special effects, the movie couldn’t have been better. Star Wars, Ghostbusters, Planet of the Apes and Princess Bride all meet this perfectly.
Another good one is Ferris Buller’s Day Off. Not special effects related but I think it’d be difficult, impossible even, to recapture the spirit, chemistry between actors, pitch perfect performances, capturing the cultural zeitgeist the way it did.
I guess I interpreted it more along the lines of “movies too good to be remade”.
