As for your characterization of the negotiation, it seems rather simplistic. But when do you suppose Treliving brought that fact up? Because I heard they had been working on a long term deal for much of the summer which would always require moving salary out.
At some point Tkachuk had a change of heart? That is certainly possible. Or maybe they couldn't agree on the numbers for a long term deal, like nearly all of the other RFA deals. Do you really believe they would have been able to agree to a long term deal, but Tkachuk backed off because he didn't want to see someone traded?
I'm not denying Tkachuk cares about his teammates. I'm just not seeing the evidence of people's opinions of Tkachuk seeking 'top dollar' being objectively wrong.

Cool, the sun popped out and my shadow appeared.
Tkachuk himself said they arrived at an understanding fairly quickly about the structure that would work for the team. The interviews are available.
Treliving articulates the consequences of a longer term larger cap hit deal on the team and Tkachuk respected the team’s position and worked with it. So I commented that posters who thought Tkachuk would and should pursue top dollar and let Tre sleep in his bed. Big deal. They were wrong.
Some of us discussed it, used logic to arrive at that conclusion that, guess what, ended up playing out, and that was confirmed by the principals. Cool.
By pursuing top dollar I meant cap hit.
I actually even had the self confidence to vote in the poll. Not mocking anybody. Just saying. I think 3x6 is the closest available answer to correct, too.
