I have no doubt Tkachuk is a team guy and likes his teammates but I see little evidence of a discount here. He is getting market rate for a three year deal no doubt IMO. If he had been willing to take a discount then Flames would be able to add a player at the deadline without shipping someone out.
The idea that the team and Tkachuk would have been able to agree to a long term deal were it not for Tkachuk's desire to avoid the Flames having to move out another player? Well that seems very unlikely given what has happened in the market...

You are the only person talking about a discount, here. Agreeing to a shorter term that provides cap flexibility is something entirely different. Please explain how this is "unlikely"? It seems eminently plausible that the following conversation transpired:
Treliving: "We can't do a five or six year deal without moving a player before 3 October."
Tkachuk & Newport: "How much can you offer on a three or four year term?"
