I have no doubt Tkachuk is a team guy and likes his teammates but I see little evidence of a discount here. He is getting market rate for a three year deal no doubt IMO. If he had been willing to take a discount then Flames would be able to add a player at the deadline without shipping someone out.

The idea that the team and Tkachuk would have been able to agree to a long term deal were it not for Tkachuk's desire to avoid the Flames having to move out another player? Well that seems very unlikely given what has happened in the market.

Tkachuk is a smart and well spoken guy. I imagine his teammates like him and he is good at representing the club. Those were great talking points and good for him and his team highlighting those in a press conference. But to say Tkachuk didn't pursue "top dollar" doesn't seem accurate IMO.
This as is absolutely correct, Tkachuk chased every last dollar he could and received top dollar on a 3-year deal. And there is nothing wrong with that. A longer deal was never likely ever in the cards as the Flames simply could not fit what he wanted into today's cap. It's the same reason most of the RFA's are signing 3-year deals, it has a smaller current cap hit.
