The GTX 1080 is a pretty damned good card, and you're going to be spending a grand to make a big jump, or $700 for not much of an improvement.
Unless you're playing anything with real-time raytracing, it's hard to justify at this point. Also keep in mind that the initial game releases with raytracing aren't particularly mind-blowing. Developers still have to get good at implementing it.
Play around with this and you'll see how the various cards stack up to each other over a pretty large sample:
