Well, Tkachuk's decision to hold out certainly worked in his favour, as he got the money and the term he wanted. It allows him to collect $30M for 4 years and takes him right to UFA.
Having the leverage of leaving will ensure his next contract will be for 7-8 years at an AAV that young UFA's are getting at that time based on his production over the next 4 years.
He played it very well. He gets his lifetime security without giving up any UFA years. The best RFA's are either getting that or a huge long term deal.
I'm not certain that Treliving had much choice here, I do believe Tkachuk was willing to hold out into the season. Sometimes you have to blink first for the good of the team.
6-years at $8M AAV certainly looks spectacular now.
