The Flames are saving $2.4 m on the cap from his buyout. Forget that the player they just signed is named Michael Stone, because that is fairly irrelevant to the question of cost. Before yesterday they had only six defensemen on the roster, so they were always going to add another one. Adding one at the League minimum—which is what Stone signed for—is actually the best outcome.
