This may get sneered at but I also think Monahan can be a good defensive player.

Monahan isn't bad defensively. He's not amazing, but he's far from a liability. He's also a young, offensively gifted player - those guys all have the same rap in their early-mid 20s. Defense takes time to learn - when Monahan is 28, nobody will be saying he's bad in his own zone.
He could stand to wear some of those Crosby sized gloves and protect his hands and wrists better.
