AFAIK Scott Oake is still employed by CBC, so keeping him on the broadcast would be more of a negotiation between rogers and CBC.
Anyways, Rogers/Sportsnet Hockey in general is running into problems as there are probably more people watching
other people click mice than chase a rubber puck across frozen water.
Twitch streamers can have up to 12-15 million subscribers, and the monetization off of youtube is probably biting into the advertising rates.
Coupled with certain age groups doing the whole cord cutting option to reduce their monthly spend on entertainment, and the whole rise of internet/facebook/twitter/youtube culture it's no wonder.
I'd be interested if the demographics for HNIC and hockey in general is skewing to the older well moneyed crowd.
Heck, the
dude who talks about Hockey from his basement has 120K subscribers on youtube. No telling how much he would pull in from Patreon or putting up Amazon affiliate links.
There's a changing of the guard happening and it'll be interesting to see if there will be new voices or analysis to be done.
