I see Kirkland as the next best option, even if he’s not the next best player. If he has a decent year in the AHL / in spot service as an injury callup, he could be good option for the following year. He’d come in cheap as he’d be an RFA with no arb rights. It’s more wishful thinking than anything, but he has at least has the potential to have some minor value for the Flames.
This sort of player isn’t flashy if he pans out, but if you can keep your 4th line guys under a million AAV, it’s good asset management. I’d rather the Flames take an AHL roster spot gamble on a minor league player so they don’t have to go out and pay a guy like Bollig $1.25 to play on the 4th line. 400k in the cap world is not insignificant.
