A problem with fixed elections is that the lead up to them is massive. A US election seems to take over a year and takes up all the media's attention. The amount of money spent is insane.
Flash, you really think the US will elect a black president? That would surprise me. Maybe I am underestimating the citizens because I would not give them that much credit. Since they voted Bush for consecutive terms I have lost faith in the US voting public.
