Oh, I get it. You wanted to know if it was appropriate to ask her out when SHE was at work (I'd better brush up the reading comprehension).
My g/f works retail and gets asked out all the time. Granted, she's never said yes (to the best of my knowledge) but it happens a lot. If she's a lifeguard she'll probably welcome the opportunity to chat with someone, seeing as all I ever see them do is sit around and yak to their co-workers all day anyways.
Some of the crap the d-bags around my girlfriend used to pull included:
-bringing her coffee
-sending her flowers
-bringing her chocolates
-asking her out for coffee/lunch/dinner
-offering her narcotics (why this one doesn't work I have no idea...nothing like "smokin a joint" on your first date)
-sending b-day cards and such
-one particular bike courier used to follow her around the city every once in a while. She'd try to ignore him but the pesky little feller was quite persistent, and would ride up to her side window and bang on it to get her attention.
I however don't endorse any of these. The element of surprise always worked best for me. If you decleare your intentions a day or two before you ask her out, she has enought ime to prepare an excuse not to do it. Hit her up outta the blue, and 9 times out of ten the answer is yes.
