Regardless, even if there are extension talks happening, it makes perfect sense for both the player and team to deny at this point until a deal actually happens. No sense setting everyone up for disappointment if negotiations fall through.

Isn't this what Rogers typically does, though? They don't extend guys that the fans love and leak rumours that they're working at it and then "aw shucks, it didn't work out, but we tried!".
