I'm originally from Medicine Hat, where you really do need AC because it gets into the 30+ degrees pretty regularly in the summer. When we moved up to Calgary, my parents thought the same thing where you don't need it in Calgary, and that way of thinking was instilled in me even after I moved out. Now after a bunch of years, I'm like, why the heck shouldn't I get AC? It cost me about $3-$4K. I spent that much building my deck.
Now that I have it, I regret not getting it earlier TBH. Yah, we might not need it as frequently as down in the Hat, but the few weeks that I do need it, it's glorious. I was able to convince my parents to get it too. Now when I go over there for dinner on Sundays, it's not boiling hot in their west facing dining room.
