The guy that installed mine said that a good rule of thumb is approximately 1 ton unit per every 800 sq ft you have. But you have to add the basement sq ft to that calculation. He said you could technically get away with less, but the unit might die earlier as a result as it'd be a smaller unit doing more regular heavy lifting.

I set my main floor to 23 and my installer said to try not to go below 22 if possible which is still very comfortable IMO. I swear my basement is closer to 15C at times due to the way the house heats and cools though even with the vents blocked down there. It's frikken glorious after wandering out of the heat on a hot day and presumably is great for my motley collection of wines.
