There would be only two reasons why the Flames might agree to this deal.
Firstly, they think an offer sheet is coming in on a 5 year deal like Aho.
Secondly, they want him to play this year and are convinced that he won't accept anything other than a 5-year deal.
I expect Tkachuk will cave before the season starts and sign a 6-year deal at more money than we like. It will start with an 8. If Tkachuk wants the same as Aho, he'll want more than $8.5M because he's added a 6th season. I'm not saying he deserves that.
The best contract we can hope for now is, I think, 6-years at $7.5M. That would be a big win for Treliving IMO.
