I can see Tkachuk not wanting a 1-2 year deal at lower AAV or a 7-8 year deal because he wants his big pay day when he is a UFA sooner than later. Great for the player but it's not beneficial for the team. Lots of comments seem to be on Tkachuks side in that "he wants to maximize his value in the short term". Of course he does. But what about from the Flames standpoint? If you want a 5 year deal, guess what.. they don't want to pay you huge money because it's a detriment to the team and it likely loses the asset early. It's a give and take situation. The Matthews contract really threw a wrench into things. Anyways, I hope he signs long term!
