It was probably cheap as hell when they signed on. They Flames just came off of their worst Dome attendance in history in 99-00, and that was also the summer of the Save The Flames campaign. It was a pretty bleak time for the "brand", so Pengrowth probably got the naming rights for about as low as it gets.
I doubt there was a ton of monetary value there for them, but it was a nice ego boost...especially when 2004 came around.
