1. "Why would they bother" is a very different point to make than "it's not possible".
2. Your whole outlook on this is pretty anthropocentric. For all you know, there are species that live for what we would think of as essentially forever, and for whom a 42 year trip (or a 400 year trip) would be like a heading to the corner store.
3. If you want good reasons for why no extraterrestrial life has contacted humanity, you could just read the wikipedia entry for the Fermi paradox.
