You have no argument from me about the stupidity of UFA, but it’s still a huge risk for teams to tender these high-end offer sheets. Even for a #1 centre, there are no guarantees. Pretend for a moment that the Oilers has not won the 2015 draft lottery, and then out of desperation offer-sheeted Connor McDavid last year, and got him. The team would still be a tire fire with no hope for improvement in sight, but now also without four first-round draft picks, and the most expensive contract in the NHL to pay over all those years of mediocrity.
I think the risk is still why GMs are still so hesitant to do this.
