I doubt a young hockey playing millionaire from some backwater town in Saskatchewan/Finland/Minnesota is hoping to end up in NYC so he can spend off days going to the Met or the Guggenheim. Heck, going to museums instead of bar hopping with teammates was seen as a flaw in Dougie's character.
Even if some of these guys want to be the Wilt Chamberlain of hockey, they can probably do that just as easily in Calgary as they can in NY or LA.

I were a pro player I wouldn't want to be in Canada, given the choice.
it would be preferable to go about your daily life without the constant scrutiny. fan bases are just a little too rabid in Canada.
sure you can get laid or dunk just as easily in Calgary as New York, but you're not anonymous in Calgary.
