Vancouver is not small market. They have the entire pacific Canada and NW USA for fan base. Nothing else around.
Calgary and Edmonton are small markets. Small cities with not much around, Red Deer and Lethbridge are smaller than some neighbourhoods in NE US.
Toronto and Montreal are large markets.
Even Colorado is a "small-ish" market. They are bigger than Calgary, but not by much.
Are large markets more desirable? You would have to think so because of Jersey sales. But not sure how much players care about that part.

Buffalo is not a large market, it's the New York state city that is never awake.
Buffalo population:
City- 257,000
Metro - 1,130,000
Calgary population:
City- 1,240,000
Metro - 1,394,000
