How exciting a city is has little value to most of these players in my opinion. Regardless of how much money guys have in their early 20s, a dude's number one objective is getting laid. Number two is probably winning at Fortnite these days.
I doubt a young hockey playing millionaire from some backwater town in Saskatchewan/Finland/Minnesota is hoping to end up in NYC so he can spend off days going to the Met or the Guggenheim. Heck, going to museums instead of bar hopping with teammates was seen as a flaw in Dougie's character.
Even if some of these guys want to be the Wilt Chamberlain of hockey, they can probably do that just as easily in Calgary as they can in NY or LA.
