They have just under 17M in cap with Callahan on the LTIR. Even if Point gets the majority of that, let's say they have maybe 7-8M to play around with. If they fill their last roster spot with a defensive prospect, Erne and Pacquette aren't going to get much. Leaving them with about 5M to sign 3 forwards. So not quite enough to make a big splash with Pavelski.

But if they move one of their mid-contracts, like Johnson at 5M, they would be able to sign Pavelski and get back whatever assets they received for Johnson.

It's quite a bit different situation with San Jose who will be struggling to fill out their roster even without Pavelski. Meier, Labanc and Thornton would require some nice accounting to come in at under 10M. That's 4M left to sign 5 players to get to the 23 man roster. And they don't have obvious players they could or would move to keep Pavelski.

And finally, all other things equal, the tax rate for Pavelski is significantly different between California and Florida.
