Not OP, also not sure how he would be picked ahead of Draisaitl at #3, but Nylander was highly touted, especially pre-2014 season, where he was considered the top prospect by many going into the season. I think the "Big 4" differentiate themselves enough that pre-draft most people agreed that the Flames would get the leftover but it's not that huge of a stretch for Nylander to be considered at the time.
I could also see maybe him getting confused with the 2016 draft where Alexander Nylander was expected to go in that 6th-8th spot by most.
