I seem to recall that Draisaitl was considered to be clearly in the second group of players in 2014 behind Ekblad and the Sams. Some of the draft rankings had Nylander ahead of Draisaitl.
At the time, because everyone assumed the top 3 would be Ekblad, Reinhart, and Bennett in some order, there was a lot of debate over who the Flames should take in 4th and Draisaitl definitely wasn't the unanimous choice.
