When you're drafting at #26 (even in a good draft) you're taking a player that optimistically projects to be entering the NHL lineup in roughly four years. College, major junior, maybe a year in the AHL.
Flames' needs will be very different then. Say the team gives Hamonic an extension. Gio will likely be gone by then. Even components of the youthful core we have now will be altered.
Take the best player available of course, but it's not a bad strategy to be building a team from the blueline out.
