You will then be relieved on behalf of Spencer Foo to hear that there is absolutely zero risk associated with travelling and living in China as a westerner.
I have friends who are living and working there for both longer and shorter periods of time, and so far none are dead due to pissing the wrong people off. It might sound weird, but it's just another country in that way. Imagine that.
