I have a 99 Corolla with about 195k kms. It has been a very reliable and dependable car and has been driven in all conditions. No question the Civic and Mazda 3 are sportier looking cars. But for economy I would probably still choose Toyota.
Every manufacturer makes the odd lemon. With a toyota your chances of getting a lemon are much lower than than with any other make. I know Mazda and Honda owners who have had much bigger problems than I've ever had with my Corolla.
The key in buying a car is do your research, figure out what's most important to you (appearance? economy? longevity? reliability?), and then test drive, test drive, test drive, as much as you can.
