It took about 20-30 uses before the grooves on my wood paddle got long enough to clean the whole top side of the grill. I cheated a bit, though. I did my regular cold scrape, and then another hot scrape after the grill heated up. Now the thing is perfect, and will remain like that until it's down to the nub, with no worry about the kid or anyone swallowing a bristle. Worth it, IMO. Those bristle brushes are all made in China and lose one or two almost every time you use it.
