Well, the "7 glasses" is probably a little off just because it would depend on how active the person is and how quickly the person loses water. Drinking water is definitely important though... something like 60% of the body is made of water and 75% of the brain is water, and naturally, we lose water in various ways and the body would need to replenish the water some how to stay healthy.

I was told that if you ever actually get thirsty and need to drink fluids to quench your thirst, you're likely not drinking enough water to begin with.

Big water drinkers (like myself) rarely get thirsty. I would suspect that going through life not drinking enough water would probably have some bad consequences when one gets up there in age, whereas the effects wouldn't be too noticeable when young.
