I was wondering the same. I figured the combined forces of unsullied and Dothraki on top of the local troops should exceed the undead.
Other thing that popped into my head. Milisandre showing up lighting all their swords on fire was completely unexpected.
So basically the original plan was to rush into darkness with completely useless swords?
