To be honest this only applies within Canada, if I meet a Canadian in the UK they just apply the nearest large City, they are from Vancouver or Calgary or Toronto, the Maritimers just use the province as do the Saskatchewaners but the Manitobian's go with Winnipeg, it comes down to what are the chances of the person you are talking to knowing or caring about which 'burb you come from, it's just easier to say the recognisable city or Province, the average Brit knows 6 or 7 Canadian cities, when I came to Canada I was just from London, saying I was from Mitcham was pointless.
