This was my interpretation as well, that he had been secretly working on that for 5 years and just "coincidentally" figured it out on that day with a little inspiration from Lang's story/experience.
It could be either way though. He brushes off the photo of Peter Parker just before it shows him working on it, but the way it seems like he was trying out yet another simulation implies that he had tried a ton of different models and variables and nothing had worked yet.
