Agreed completely.
The rule:
59.3 Major Penalty - A major penalty, at the discretion of the Referee
based on the
severity of the contact, shall be imposed on a player
who “cross checks” an opponent (see 59.5).
The bolded is what bothers me, the severity of the crosscheck itself was not BAD or MALICIOUS at all. You see worse in front of the net when a D-man tries to clear the crease out just about every play.
Its unfortunate that he got injured, but it wasn't because he was crosschecked in the face like they claimed. You can argue VGK didnt have to allow 4 PP goals, but the problem still remains it should have NEVER happened in the first place. 2 minutes maybe, 4 minutes because of blood at the ABSOLUTE most but 5 major is ridiculous. The league should punish those officials.
This is worse than the phantom "hook/slash" (cant remember) on Fantenburg against CGY resulting in the 5 on 3 which stole the momentum from us.
They need to fix the consistency, the accountability and the integrity of refereeing the NHL. You cant put away the whistles in the playoffs, it changes the dynamic of the game between regular season and playoffs.
The Avalanche Defensive depth is atrocious, but they were allowed to play the old school slash, hook, clutch and grab etc and captalized on that because they weren't being called. The Flames defesnsemen (shame on us) did NOT and were called more when they did. Ian Cole looked like the 2nd coming of Chris Pronger out there.
Hold these idiots accountable, fix this before they dictate another game/series/heaven forbid a Stanley cup outcome.
