But it's useful as Ref MacLean is admitting that this is exactly how refs think.
They *want* to manage games, they *want* to balance penalties. They *choose* to call penalties selectively depending on the time in the game and the score on the clock.
I have no doubt that the refs knew it was 3-0 with less than 10 minutes left in a heated Game 7 and that influenced their call in this situation. Would it have been the same call if it was 1-1?
No way.
