But you're being disingenuous if you pretend that historically low oil prices didn't have a LOT to do with the deficit being as large as it was.
Also, what is a government supposed to do when unemployment is high? Slap its citizens with a round of austerity, when they are already suffering as it is?

You could have been like Saskatchewan. Higher personal income taxes, a pst and significant spending cuts but only a 350 million dollar deficit so the equivalent of about a 1.4 billion dollar deficit.
However i didn’t see too many conservatives wanting a sales tax or NDP wanting cuts like Sask did.
