Make this movie as tense as you can. Make it as dark as you can. Make it feel like everything can be lost and the hero's could end up dead.
This exactly. I enjoyed TLJ for the most part, but the jokes definitely seemed out of place and unnecessary, especially the dialogue between with Poe and Hux at the beginning, which felt more like Spaceballs than Star Wars. Nothing wrong with a bit of humor here and there, but it needs to be in the right places and not feel forced. The original trilogy handled that balance pretty well IMO, as did TFA.
