Starting Smith is totally the right call imo. He has played well lately and you would like that puck moving ability in the playoffs . This is a perfect scenario to see what Smith has got as this game should be very playoff like. If he is great tonight you can lean toward starting him in game 1, if he craps the bed you know to start Ritter.
