I want to add that one of the best portrayals of Khruschev was still by Bob Hoskins in Enemy at the Gates.
There's an excellent book Stalin the Court of the Red Tsar and within it you learn how absolutely ruthless he was and how he dealt with Beria in itself is a story that has to be read.
BTW the book is by Simon Sebag Montefiore.
