Sorry for the late reply, but since no one answered you...
I explored the mini-split units a couple of years ago. I don't remember the name of the vendor(s) I checked with, but I remember that the cost was going to be almost as much as a Central A/C unit for the entire floor, so it didn't make sense at all.
Do you have one furnace for the whole house, or do you have one per floor?
We have two furnaces, and we just got the one A/C unit for the upper floor. The main floor does get warm in the summer, but the upper floor was unbearable, even at night.
We don't run the upstairs A/C all the time though...if no one is upstairs, we just turn off the system from the thermostat, and switch it back to Cool mode in the evening. So your thermostat should give you that ability to only run the A/C on demand.
