I can't even fathom how anyone could let their child sleep over unattended at a weird grown man's house, and in his bed no less.

Sorry, but there is no way the parents could be that dumb. They had to have known that at the very least, they were taking an unreasonable risk. No doubt they were seduced by his celebrity, but the struggle they are feeling is probably more to do with a guilty conscience.
