Any outlet that is forced to retract a story should be made to make that retraction and the reasons behind it known to an equivalent level as the original story. It might not mitigate the damage they do, but it might make them think twice about vetting their sources if they would need to run a bunch of pieces on how they screwed up and reported something that wasn't true. Want to run your story as the headline piece on the news and make it front and center on your website? That's where the retraction goes, along with the reason behind the retraction.
