I don't think it's a huge problem as the story is still straightforward although you may lack some of the background details of the Metro. It's all based on post-apocalyptic Moscow where survivors have to live in this underground Metro with the first games being based a lot around exploring sewers, etc and gas masks being required for any on-ground missions. This one is a little different in that it deals with a crew finding some truths about the Metro and mostly on-ground quests so very little dark underground sewer stuff that made the first games creepy with the mutated creatures and humans. I enjoy the series because it's probably the best example of what life would be like after an apocalypse as it's a constant struggle for survival as you have to craft ammunition, gas mask filters, weapons, etc and even carry around a manual hand crank generator to recharge flashlights, etc. It's all very Russian seeing its based on Russian novels which is a nice change from the Western or Japanese based games we typically play.
