It's way easier than it seems. When you get in the car just repeat "stay left" over and over to yourself. In New Zealand they actually attach a "stay left" sign to the steering wheel on rental vehicles. Haven't seen them in Australia.
Most of the time, there's someone in front of you that you can follow. Not blindly of course, be aware and use your judgement, but following someone makes it pretty easy as to where to go next. And if there's nobody to follow, just always choose to "stay left" and you will be fine.
